Dear Mercedes ISD Families,
On Monday, October 2, 2023, the administration was made aware that a student was in possession of a look-a-like weapon that was brought on to school grounds at Sgt. William G. Harrell Middle School.
All safety protocols were implemented, and the look-a-like weapon was swiftly secured and removed by campus administration, with no reported incident. At no time was anyone on campus in danger. The situation continues to be investigated by school authorities and law enforcement.
Counseling and support services are available for any students and staff members. At Mercedes ISD, we are committed to maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for all.

Today at 01:30 p.m., students and staff at Sgt. William G. Harrell Middle School conducted a Lockdown Drill and were ordered to lockdown in their rooms or area and to clear the halls. The students and staff locked down in their classrooms using the safety strategy. The purpose of this Lockdown Drill was to test Sgt. William Harrell Middle School’s ability to be prepared for a Lockdown when there is a threat or hazard inside the school building. From parental custody disputes to intruders to an active assailant, Lockdown uses classroom and school security actions to protect students and staff from threats. After our Lockdown Drill, Sgt.
